John West makes things with music, words, and code. He holds a BA in Philosophy and a Performance Degree in Historical Performance from Oberlin College and Conservatory. He is the co-founder and technical director of Et Cetera Gallery, a Chicago-based micropress that creates digital and IRL narrative experiments using a variety of media. He is an MFA candidate in nonfiction writing at Bennington College. His musical work, which includes several full-length concept recitals—Modern Mythologies, The Odyssey, At the Loom, and King of that Also—attempts to build coherent narratives using disparate songs as the base unit. It explores the interplay between historical and ahistorical musical contexts and practices. A finalist at the 2009 Montreal International Recorder Competition, West received an award for creativity in programming. He has studied with Allison Melville, Kathryn Montoya, Nina Stern, and his mentor and friend Cléa Galhano.
