Stanley King

Oboe

A former faculty member of the Baroque Performance Institute at Oberlin College and currently at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, oboist Stanley King is a well-known performer around the world. He received both a B.A. and M.M. from the Manhattan School of Music and also pursued studies in Historical Performance Practice at the Schola Cantorum in Basel, Switzerland.Stanley has recorded extensively with Concentus Musicus (Vienna), Academy of Ancient Music (London) Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra (San Francisco), American Bach Soloists, Smithsonian Chamber Orchestra, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra (Toronto), and Plymouth Music Series Orchestra. He has performed at the London Proms, the Edinborough Festival, the Mozarteum in Salzburg, La Scala in Milan, Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Carneigie Hall, Avery Fischer Hall and Alice Tully Hall in New York, and the Governor’s Palace in Sao Paolo State, Brazil. In addition to playing oboe and oboe d’amore with Lyra, Stanley is also Principal Oboe with the Minnesota Sinfonia. He performs with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Minnesota Opera Orchestra, Bach Society of Minnesota, Philomusica, the Minnesota Contemporary Ensemble and the St. Scholastica Center for Early Music Orchestra in Duluth. He served as Principal Oboe for the Washington (DC) Ballet Orchestra from 1981to 2002. Stanley enjoys finding and resurrecting lost musical gems. He recently completed a new performing edition of one of the so-called Dresden Concerti written by Johann David Heinichen to showcase the court orchestra at Dresden. He also enjoys gardening, woodworking, hiking & camping, and, when time allows, handcrafting fine ales.
